Ledbetter is an unincorporated community in the far northern reaches of Fayette County, Texas, on U.S. Highway 290 and the old Southern Pacific Railroad, about eight miles east of Giddings. It sits a mile north of Cummings Creek on the watershed between the Brazos and Colorado rivers, in the rolling post-oak country that characterizes this part of Central Texas. The setting places it roughly midway between Austin to the northwest and Houston to the southeast. The community grew as a railroad and agricultural town on the Houston & Texas Central line, serving the farms and ranches of northern Fayette County. Like many rail stops, Ledbetter developed a small commercial core, churches, and, for a time, its own independent school district. That civic era ended in 1947, when the town voted to disincorporate and the Ledbetter Independent School District was dissolved, with its remaining students absorbed into the Giddings school system. Since then, Ledbetter has remained a small, quiet crossroads. Its population has been recorded in the dozens for decades, and only a handful of businesses have persisted, while Giddings, Brenham, and the surrounding towns absorbed most of the area's commercial activity. The Southern Pacific rail line and U.S. 290 remain the community's defining transportation spines. For residents, Ledbetter offers rural acreage, privacy, and a location convenient to both Austin and Houston, along with the cultural attractions of the Fayette County area, including the nearby town of Round Top. It endures as a sparsely settled piece of Central Texas countryside with a distinct rail-town past.
