Apartments in Southmayd, TX

Welcome to Southmayd, a small Grayson County city on State Highway 56, just west of Sherman in the Sherman–Denison metro area.

Southmayd is a small city in central Grayson County, in north Texas, located along State Highway 56 about seven miles west of Sherman, the county seat. With a population of 978 at the 2020 census, it is part of the Sherman–Denison metropolitan area, a region anchored by the twin cities to the east and increasingly shaped by growth along the U.S. 75 and U.S. 82 corridors. The community took shape when the Texas and Pacific Railway laid tracks through the area across a land grant held by D.S. Southmayd, from whom the town takes its name. A post office and businesses followed the railroad, and Southmayd developed as a small agricultural and rail-side settlement serving the surrounding countryside. For much of its history it remained a modest rural town of a few hundred residents, its fortunes tied to farming and the nearby county seat. Today Southmayd functions as a residential community within the larger Sherman-Denison region. It is served by the S&S Consolidated Independent School District, which joins Southmayd with the neighboring town of Sadler and operates an elementary campus within the city. The district is a central institution for local families, and its schools anchor community life. The city's location gives residents easy access to Sherman for shopping, healthcare, and employment, while Lake Texoma, the large Red River reservoir, lies a short drive to the north for recreation. Southmayd itself retains a quiet, small-town character with room to grow, offering a lower-density alternative within one of north Texas's expanding metropolitan areas. It is a place where rural roots and regional growth meet.
