Oak Ridge is a small incorporated town in north-central Kaufman County, Texas, occupying a narrow strip of land along Texas State Highway 34 between Kaufman, the county seat, and the larger city of Terrell. The town was incorporated in the early 1970s and had a population of 771 at the 2020 census, up from 495 a decade earlier. Despite that growth, Oak Ridge retains the quiet, agricultural character that has long defined this part of Kaufman County, with open fields, scattered homes, and a low-density, rural setting. The town's geography is unusually linear: Oak Ridge stretches roughly five miles along both sides of State Highway 34, which serves as its main street and its primary connection to the rest of the county. Kaufman lies about six miles to the southwest, and Terrell a similar distance to the northeast, giving residents access to the schools, shopping, and services of both communities while allowing the town itself to remain primarily residential and agricultural. Public education is split between two districts. Parts of Oak Ridge attend Kaufman Independent School District, with campuses in Kaufman, while other parts attend Terrell Independent School District, with schools in Terrell. This divided arrangement is common in rural Texas towns that were incorporated across pre-existing district boundaries. The town's location puts it on the eastern edge of the Dallas-Fort Worth metropolitan area. Interstate 20 and U.S. Route 80 pass through Terrell to the northeast, and U.S. Highway 175 runs through Kaufman to the southwest, linking Oak Ridge to Dallas and the broader region. Most housing consists of single-family homes on larger lots, and the town's population skews toward families and retirees who value ownership and space over density and walkability.
