Dallas County Logistics Hub

Apartments in Hutchins, TX

Welcome to Hutchins, a Dallas County city just south of downtown Dallas, anchored by a major Union Pacific intermodal terminal and served by Interstates 45 and 20.

Hutchins is a city in southern Dallas County, Texas, roughly twelve minutes south of downtown Dallas and part of the Dallas-Fort Worth metroplex. The 2020 census counted 5,607 residents. The city traces its origins to the late nineteenth century, when it developed as a trading hub for area farmers with general stores, cotton gins, and mills, and it was incorporated in 1945. The community was named for William J. Hutchins, a president of the railway that served the area. In recent decades, Hutchins has become a significant logistics and transportation center. The Union Pacific Railroad opened its 360-acre Dallas Intermodal Terminal in 2005, a state-of-the-art facility that straddles Hutchins and neighboring Wilmer and handles international container traffic for the region. The city's location — served by Interstate 45 and Interstate 20, with Interstate 35 minutes away — makes it a strategic distribution point within the metroplex, and its economic development marketing emphasizes being in the center of it all. Hutchins offers a suburban-rural mix in a heavily industrial corner of Dallas County, with a blend of single-family homes, rental housing, and large employment sites. Its position places residents within minutes of downtown Dallas employment, entertainment, and services, while retaining a lower-density, small-city feel compared with the urban core. Public education is provided by Dallas Independent School District, which operates Wilmer-Hutchins High School and other campuses serving the area; Dallas College provides higher education and workforce training for Dallas County residents. The Atwell Public Library serves as a local civic resource. For residents, Hutchins combines small-city living with extraordinary freeway access and proximity to one of the nation's largest metropolitan economies. Its identity as a logistics hub, coupled with its south Dallas location, makes it a practical home base for workers across the metroplex.
