East Texas Railroad Town

Apartments in Fruitvale, TX

Welcome to Fruitvale, a small Van Zandt County city on U.S. Highway 80, set in the historic Sabine River valley fruit-growing district of East Texas.

Fruitvale is a small city in the northeastern corner of Van Zandt County, Texas, set along U.S. Highway 80 in the gently rolling country of the upper Sabine River valley. It sits roughly ten miles north of Canton, the county seat, between the neighboring towns of Edgewood to the west and Grand Saline to the east. The surrounding landscape is a mix of pasture, woodlots, and small farms, with the larger Lake Tawakoni reservoir just to the north. The community began as a railroad switch on the Texas & Pacific Railway, built through northern Van Zandt County in 1873. The switch was first called Bolton for a railroad official, and the settlement that grew around it changed names several times. Around 1901, local fruit growers petitioned to rename it, and in 1903 the post office opened under the name Fruitvale—a reference to the peach and fruit orchards that once defined the district's economy. Today Fruitvale is a quiet, close-knit small town of roughly 475 people. Its identity is still tied to the land, though the large commercial orchards of the early 1900s have largely given way to pasture and hay ground. U.S. Highway 80 remains the town's main street and its connection to the wider region, while Interstate 20, reached south through Canton, links residents to Dallas to the west and Tyler to the east. Life in Fruitvale centers on the school, the churches, and the rural rhythms of East Texas. Fruitvale Independent School District, the hometown Bobcats, anchors community life, and the nearby lake and state park provide fishing, boating, and outdoor recreation. For residents, Fruitvale offers a small-town, semi-rural setting within commuting reach of the county's larger towns and the Dallas–Fort Worth metroplex beyond. The town's modest scale means most shopping and services are found in Canton, Grand Saline, or Edgewood, preserving Fruitvale's role as a quiet residential and agricultural community.
