Eddy is a community in southwestern McLennan County, Texas, along the Interstate 35 corridor, and it forms the western portion of the incorporated city of Bruceville-Eddy. The area lies about 18 miles south of Waco and 16 miles north of Temple, placing it within the Waco metropolitan area and in the heart of the fast-growing Central Texas highway corridor. A small southern portion of the combined city extends into Falls County. The community's origins reach to the late nineteenth century, when Eddy developed as an agricultural and railroad settlement. By the mid-1880s it supported roughly 150 residents, three general stores, two churches, a school, and a gristmill, and it continued to grow through the 1890s, when some estimates placed its population near 700. A bank opened in 1901 and received a national charter in 1915. In 1928, Eddy's schools consolidated with those of neighboring Bruceville, the first such school merger in McLennan County, foreshadowing the eventual combination of the two communities into the single city of Bruceville-Eddy that exists today. That school consolidation endures in the form of the Bruceville-Eddy Independent School District, which serves the city and the surrounding countryside and remains a central civic institution. Eddy retains its own identity and its own ZIP code, 76524, within the combined municipality, while Bruceville uses a separate code. Eddy's setting is agricultural and rural, with cropland, pasture, and scattered homesites giving way to the commercial and industrial activity of the I-35 corridor. For residents, the community offers small-town character and open space with immediate freeway access to the jobs, hospitals, universities, and amenities of Waco and Temple. It is a practical, low-density option in one of Central Texas's busiest growth corridors.
