Cotton-Era Town in Brown County

Apartments in Blanket, TX

Welcome to Blanket, a small Brown County town with a memorable name and cotton-era roots, near Lake Brownwood.

Blanket is a small town in eastern Brown County, in west-central Texas, situated along U.S. Routes 67 and 377 about fourteen miles northeast of Brownwood, the county seat, and roughly twelve miles southwest of Comanche. At the 2020 census its population was 369. The town takes its name from Blanket Creek, which runs through the area. According to local tradition, a group of surveyors named the creek in 1852 after coming upon a band of Tonkawa Indians who had been caught in a rainstorm and had spread their blankets over sumac bushes near the water to dry. The settlement that grew beside the creek adopted the name, and Blanket was established as a farming community in the late nineteenth century. Blanket reached its peak during the cotton boom of the late 1920s, when three gins operated in town and the population climbed to about 472. The Great Depression brought a decline, and the town's population settled around 300, where it has remained stable for nearly a century — a longevity that speaks to the community's quiet resilience. Artist Harold O. Kelly is among those who spent time in the town. Today Blanket is served by its own small school district, Blanket ISD, which anchors community life. Residents look to Brownwood for shopping, healthcare, and employment, while Lake Brownwood, a 7,300-surface-acre reservoir with a Civilian Conservation Corps-built state park, lies a short drive to the southwest for fishing, boating, and camping. Blanket offers a low-key, agricultural small-town setting with deep roots and convenient access to the larger county seat.
